A BEAUTIFUL COMMUNITY

Welcome

Welcome to the glorious Village of Ocean Beach, the unofficial capital of the half-mile-wide by 32-mile-long barrier beach of Fire Island, just south and parallel to Long Island. It’s perfect for all ages. Both singles and families. It’s unique character is in its varied restaurants, treasure-laden shops and home-spun galleries. Ocean Beach combines the allure of a resort with a casual atmosphere and the safety of a lost age. This Website enables you to research information about a Village that is a tranquil retreat during Spring, Fall and Winter, and dynamically alive with people and activities during the summer.

We have it all - beautiful supervised ocean and bay beaches, lovely one family homes, restaurants, hotels, bed & breakfasts, nightlife, movies, concerts, youth group, tennis, basketball, baseball, art shows, an international film festival, Memorial Day and July 4th parades and celebrations, dock concert performances, boutiques and shops, ferry and water taxi services, a seasonal and transient boat marina, medical and nursing services, a post office, little red wagons and bicycles. And in the summer, there are no cars!

The Village of Ocean Beach functions through a Mayor and Board of Trustees, a Village Office, a Justice Court, a Police Department, a volunteer Fire and Emergency Medical Department, a Water and Sewer Plant, and a first class contingent of lifeguards.

From time to time, this Website will update you on our various meetings, laws, regulations, and will highlight upcoming feature arts and entertainment events. We hope to create as much excitement in the Website as we actually generate in the Village when it's aglow with happy energetic people enjoying the sun, sand, sea and sky from the wave-crested Atlantic Ocean to the serene Great South Bay.

Getting there

Ocean Beach is just an hour from Manhattan and a half-hour ferry ride from Bay Shore across the Great South Bay. Frequent ferries are available for after work getaways, day visitors, vacationers, weekenders and homeowners. From early spring to late fall, jitneys, taxis and the LIRR provide service to and from New York, the airports and Bay Shore. Water taxis provide quick access to other Fire Island communities.

Relax

As you cross the Great South Bay and enter a wonderful vacation world.

A unique village experience

Once you arrive in the Village of Ocean Beach, settle in for a casual and relaxing visit. Bordered by the bay and ocean, the town is car free. Getting around means walking or biking to small shops, galleries, restaurants, ice cream parlors, a movie house and the beaches. Gather on the wide quay at sunset, listen to weekly open air concerts, see children sell painted seashells and visit craft fairs showcasing local talent. Hotels and inns are available for weekends or vacations. Stress-free, it’s the place for fun, friendliness and festivity.

Water activities abound

In Ocean Beach, the ocean and bay combine into a special water paradise. Part of one of the ten great beaches of the world, no radios or Frisbees spoil its serenity. Warm ocean currents make the water inviting early in the summer and long into the fall. On the bay, the Village Marina is a welcome anchorage for boaters. Watersports abound: swimming, fishing, surfing, boating, wind surfing or just lazing in the sun.

For kids & families

Ocean Beach has harmoniously blended a thriving mix of homeowners and renters into one community. It has a school up to the sixth grade, houses of worship, fire and police departments, a post office and excellent medical services. Summer camp enriches the lives of children five to twelve with a half-day nursery, full days for older kids and a Counselor-in-Training Program for teens. Families can participate in many activities: water sports, arts, crafts, ecology, soccer, softball, tennis, drama, yoga and aerobics. It’s a safe and care-free summertime…and a great place to raise kids year round.
